Wikimoneda is a knowledge base for Numismatists. Wikimoneda aims at sharing data according to Linked Open Data standards. Everybody can add data to Wikimoneda. All the data is automatically formatted into the RDF format (a standard for Linked Open Data) relying on the OntoCoins ontology. Your data becomes "open data", that is freely accessible and downloadable. Providing data available to everyone is a good way to speed up research in this area. Wikimoneda is a knowledge base that contains: Coins from several museums, coins from private collections, die links, die design reconstruction (see below).

Numerous ancient coins were struck with dies that were larger than the blanks. Consequently, these coins do not show the complete coin design. This is the case for Celtic coins, Visigothic, Barbarian imitations and Indian medieval coins, for instance. It is thus necessary to reveal the complete coin designs precisely as they appeared on the original dies at the time of striking. This is the only way to ensure a relevant study of such a coins.

Using specific die markers and die breaks in coins to identify the original die, we use an innovative methodology called Die Design Reconstruction (DDR) using Information Technology and more precisely imaging techniques (Lopez and Richard, 2014). This simple and reproducible method consists of overlaying with great precision, high definition digital photographs of the die markers in incomplete coin designs to reconstruct the original die design. Such a method allows us to discover previously unknown coin designs, shed light on lost ancient knowledge and reveal new representations (gods, rulers, military chiefs, etc.).

Die Design Reconstruction using imaging techniques is an innovative method which can create new research subjects for all time periods, particularly through the iconographic study of the newly revealed symbols and elements present on the coins. Furthermore, DDR contributes to a better understanding of ancient coin mint organization and to more precise coin classifications.

Wikimoneda is useful for any institute (private or public) wishing to structure their data into RDF (Semantic Web format). Wikimoneda gives the opportunity to highlight collections that are usually in the dark. Wikimoneda gives the opportunity to consult collections online that are often difficult to access otherwise.
